Mexican food is somewhat lacking in the South African’s hometown of Durban in South Africa. Her exposure to authentic Mexican flavors beyond El Paso Taco Kits (no shade) has been limited at best. The Cambodian has had much more of a connection to the cuisine (and not just because people often think he is indeed, Mexican). Saigon is home to a number of very good Mexican joints, many of which we frequent on a regular basis. We had heard about Machotaco but we had never actually ventured past the borders of District 2 to check it out. Then, a few months ago Ricardo reached out and asked us to come and dine at his restaurant. Well unfortunately, communication lines were crossed and we never actually got to meet him or discuss the food he so passionately creates in this little gem of a restaurant in District 3. Nevertheless, we had a wonderful experience.
The vibe in the restaurant is lovely. Its warm and bright but still intimate and homely. The service is excellent and the staff are attentive without being overbearing (is there anything worse?) They have a good selection of vegetarian options to go along with the usual meaty suspects and an impressive list of tequila (which we didn’t get involved in on this particular occasion but we will be back!). We ordered the vegetarian mushroom nachos which were hands down the best nachos we have ever had. We then had a fish taco, fajitas and a burrito – all superb! The prices are very reasonable and the portion sizes are enough to order a few things and share. We left very full and very happy.
Check out their Facebook and pop in for some Mexican street food epicness!
