Biên Hòa is a city a little way out of Saigon and the last place we would have expected to eat phenomenal Thai cuisine in a chic little neighbourhood hangout with trendy decor and an upbeat, lively atmosphere. A few weeks ago we were contacted by the owner of Yum Yum Thai, Luân, and invited to have lunch at the Biên Hòa branch of his two-store strong operation. Luân has an unbelievable eye for detail and after a stint in the USA with some training from a Thai chef, he has considered every last detail in his restaurants. He has an ‘open kitchen’ policy and places utmost importance on efficient service and clean, authentic food.
The restaurant has a great atmosphere and the yellow walls, black and white tiled floors and greenery make for a bright, cheerful environment. The staff are very attentive and the menu is in both Vietnamese and English so ordering is easy. As usual, we went to town and ended up with a table covered in delicious smelling, beautifully presented food. We ordered the papaya salad (79k), vegetable fried rice (85k), mixed stir-fried vegetables (75k), stir-fried eggplant with chilli (75k) and the Northern Thai style chicken (half- 165k). They also stock East West Craft beer which of course, the Cambodian could not resist. They have an extensive selection of dishes and everything we saw coming out of the kitchen looked fabulous. The restaurant was also packed full of families and couples enjoying their Saturday afternoon and delicious food.
We made quick work of everything on our table and by the end of the meal had decided that we were beyond impressed with this little Biên Hòa city gem. Its worth a visit if you are in the area but its also worth the trip out if you feel like a bit of a drive and change of scenery.
