FlavorBox: Meal Delivery Service

November 5, 2019 ~ atewhatwhere ~ Leave a comment

Anyone who lives in Saigon knows that life can get pretty busy in this city. A full time job, relationships, pets, kids etc in combination with the wild (wonderful) chaos of life in Vietnam might mean that time is limited. In more recent months we have been trying to focus on our health and are … Continue reading FlavorBox: Meal Delivery Service

Sara Ethiopian Restaurant in Saigon

July 14, 2019July 14, 2019 ~ atewhatwhere ~ Leave a comment

In Saigon we are spoilt for choice when eating out. Visitors to the city may be surprised at the abundance of options available to diners. Sushi? Pizza? British-style fish and chips? Acaii bowls? Pad Thai? You name it, Saigon has it. The one thing missing was an African restaurant and the newly opened 'Sara Ethiopian … Continue reading Sara Ethiopian Restaurant in Saigon

L’Herbanyste: Plant-based comfort food

June 9, 2019June 9, 2019 ~ atewhatwhere ~ Leave a comment

The plant-based food movement has taken hold in Saigon and definitely grown enormously in recent years. This has come hand-in-hand with a shift to more conscious living and a heightened awareness of the impact of human behaviour on the world around us. In addition, people are more concerned with what they put into their bodies … Continue reading L’Herbanyste: Plant-based comfort food

Eddie’s American Diner

January 4, 2019 ~ atewhatwhere ~ Leave a comment

If you thought you couldn't find an authentic American diner experience in Saigon, you thought wrong, friends. Eddie's is a fairly new addition to the growing food landscape in Thao Dien and serves up American diner food exactly as you like it. Warm cinnamon buns, bottomless coffee, killer milkshakes and epic breakfasts. The food is … Continue reading Eddie’s American Diner

Yu Chu at the Intercontinental Saigon

December 26, 2018 ~ atewhatwhere ~ Leave a comment

The Intercontinental Hotel in Saigon is one of the best in the city, so naturally it is also home to some of the top restaurants.  Any Saigon native, whether expat or local, knows that the place to go for Chinese food is the city's Chinatown Cho Lon (District 5) however we were looking for a slightly … Continue reading Yu Chu at the Intercontinental Saigon

Vegan Food Tour

December 17, 2018December 17, 2018 ~ atewhatwhere ~ 5 Comments

We will keep this brief so as not to give away too much of the tour. We aren't really 'tour' kinda people however recently some travelling friends (nomadnoodles) recommended this walking vegan tour and their rave review had us sold. The tour is run by Hieu, a dynamic, young Vietnamese man who is very knowledgeable … Continue reading Vegan Food Tour

Simple Place

December 11, 2018December 11, 2018 ~ atewhatwhere ~ Leave a comment

Simple place is about as no frills as you can get. If you drive too quickly down Quoc Huong Street in Thao Dien, you won't even see it. Its the kind of spot you end up at deliberately, not stumble upon unintentionally. Two tiled steps get you up into the restaurant, through the sliding glass … Continue reading Simple Place

The Vintage Emporium

December 8, 2018December 8, 2018 ~ atewhatwhere ~ Leave a comment

The Vintage Emporium in Saigons expat suburb of Thao Dien, is a real aesthetic masterpiece. The restaurant is housed in a magnificent old remodelled vila with dark wood finishes and big curved windows which let in an abundance of light. The decor is minimal but trendy and the space feels clean and uncluttered. Big palms … Continue reading The Vintage Emporium

Welcome to Ate What Where. We are a Cambodian-American and South African couple living in Asia. This little food love child was born out of our passion for exploring Saigon and trying as many of it's diverse range of restaurants, cafes and bars as we could. The joy of moving to a new neighbourhood (and country!) is looking for a new ‘local’. We definitely don’t mind doing the research if it means we get to add trendy spots like @blacklistcoffeeroasters to our rotation. Friendly morning service and delish coffee/chai!
After a very long day of errands and doing all the bits you need to do when you move to another country, we needed a taste of home for lunch. We popped in to Viet Hoa around 2pm after the lunch crowd. The service was great and the food came out quick. The broth was up to the Cambodians very high standards and everything was fresh with very big portions. We had the Phở and the Bún thịt nướng. AUD$40 including drinks.
We have finally made it to our new home in Perth and as if by fate the coffee shop down the road from our Airbnb is owned by a Vietnamese couple. The Cambodian got to use his rusty Vietnamese and we sipped on some delish coffees and lusted after their sandwich/croissant/pastry selection (we didn’t have time to eat today but we will be back). They also sell fresh flowers in store. Such a cute Como cafe with a very busy early morning crowd!
Our last meal in NYC at the Australian inspired @banter_nyc for brunch. The service and food is fabulous. Definitely recommend for a laid back brekkie/lunch/brunch. They have a great coffee selection too.
We stopped in for lunch today at the @bistronj in Haddonfield with our family. With this being the almost-end of our time in the USA we wanted to get in a few ‘American style’ meals before heading down under. The bistro food is delicious. The Cambodian got a lamb burger that was sublime. The rest of the table ordered a variety of lunch/brekkie items and all of the food came out fast, hot and beautifully presented.
We had an early dinner at Penang in China Town this evening. The Cambodian has been eating here for years and he was happy to see it survived the pandemic! The service is good and the food is tasty, well priced and arrives fast after ordering. Definitely an ideal place to go with a big group.
